Duminy leads Cobras from the front

JP Duminy played a captain’s innings with his third half century of the campaign as the WSB Cape Cobras posted an above-par score of 289 for six against the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in their Momentum One-Day Cup match at Eurolux Boland Park in Paarl on Wednesday.

Duminy struck six boundaries and two maximums before falling in the penultimate over for a well-played 86 off just 66 balls to become the leading run-scorer in this year’s event.

Duminy’s entry into the fray lifted the run rate which was languishing around the four-runs per over mark, after the Cobras had won the toss and elected to bat first.

Jason Smith (16) assisted his captain as they posted a quick-fire 50 off 46 balls for the fourth wicket, building on the second-wicket stand of 103 between Aviwe Mgijima (40) and the ever-present Pieter Malan (62).

The home side suffered an early setback when Robbie Frylinck (10-1-44-3) clean-bowled Richard Levi for a second-ball duck. But Malan, who faced 88 deliveries while striking five boundaries, found good support in Mgijima and the pair set the platform with their century stand from 153 deliveries.

But the offspin of Prenelan Subrayen (9-0-53-1) and the legspin of Imran Tahir (9-0-58-1) claimed two quick wickets as Subrayen had Mgijima caught and the Tahir had Malan trapped in front.

But Duminy set about upping the ante with Smith and then with Wayne Parnell (32), as the two Proteas players rattled up 76 runs for the fifth wicket off 63 balls.

The big boost came at the back-end of the innings after Parnell, who faced 31 balls, was bowled by Sibonelo Makhanya (5-0-34-1) as wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne stepped in.

Verreynne and Duminy added 40 runs off only 28 balls for the sixth wicket with Verreynne smashing an unbeaten 32 off only 18 deliveries, including four boundaries and a six.

Andile Phehlukwayo, who bowled the final over, was excellent in his support of Frylinck, conceding just 41 runs in his nine overs despite going wicketless.

The Dolphins will have a tough task in reaching 290 for victory under lights in Paarl.
