Monarchs blast opposition parties over alleged attempt to kill Ebonyi governor

Traditional rulers from Uburu autonomous community, the hometown of the Governor of Ebonyi state, Chief David Umahi and that of the minister for science and technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu at the weekend berated opposition parties for alleged attempt to kill Umahi.

The monarchs made this known in a press statement signed by HRH Eze Godwin Akpandu Okoro (Ibom Eze II of Enu-Uburu, HRH Eze Laz Umahi Nweze (Eze Adu III of Uburu community, HRH Eze Uchechukwu Onu (Okenze II of Etiti Uburu community and issued to journalists at Aka Ama-eze ancestral ground Uburu, Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi state.

The traditional rulers accused the opposition in the state of alleged attempt to kill governor Umahi to takeover power in the forthcoming 2019 general election.

“We the Uburu traditional council wishes to issue this statement on behalf of Ezumezu Uburu, in response to the planting of IED (improvised explosive device) at the Ebonyi state PDP Secretariat where our illustrious son and the governor of Ebonyi state, Chief David Umahi was expected.

“We are sad, angry, shocked and utterly dismayed that the opposition in Ebonyi state in their desperate attempt to have one of their own elected the governor of Ebonyi state, so that they can turn back the clock of the development of our state by pillaging our patrimony, will go to the extent of making an attempt on the life of the governor because of his soaring popularity with the Ebonyi electorates,” they said.

They warned oppositions parties in Ebonyi to stear clear of any attempt to eliminate the governor before the 2019 general election.

“While we recognize the place of opposition in a multi party democracy, we abhore and condemn the resort to violence and attempt on the live of the chief executive of the state.

“We invite the opposition to note that contest for political position is not and should not be a do-or-die affair but rather a contest of ideas. If they consider themselves popular, the 2019 general election is a golden opportunity for them to test their popularity.

“We state boldly that this nefarious act of seeking to eliminate the state governors life is an early confirmation of their lack of solid political base in Ebonyi state and the acceptance of the certain defeat that await them in the 2019 general election,” they added.

“We respectfully request President Mohammadu Buhari, the inspector general of Police, the national director of DSS and other security chiefs to put the opposition in the state on notice that any resort to violence in the build up of the next general elections will be severely dealt with as well as to fish out the mastermind, sponsors and those that planted the IED.

” We caution, and indeed sound a serious note of warning that we shall not fold our hands and watch them do any form of harm to our dear son, David Umahi,” they warned.
